Kristy Roschke, Associate Faculty Member at the Cronkite School @ ASU MADE MY DAY! I have been anxious, nervous, and very excited about learning how to take our 1-year-old paper online. Having no background in tech terms, I was so worried this would be a VERY long learning process. However, not only do I now feel like I can do this, but I am also proud of my students and programs who have already taken a few of the first steps she recommends.
We do have a (small, tiny, itty-bitty) online presence. We have files on our school website of our print publication as well as our few broadcasts. Also, The Long Valley Patch gives ua a "shout out" and uploads out files each time an issue is printed (links are below if you'd like to look).

A Little Boost from the LV Patch
Now, I am ready to start tackling the online beast of a newspaper. I am definetely planning on taking baby steps--hsj.org and then beyond. Our other forcus for this school year will be to have a much larger online prescence in regard to social media. My managing editor will be happily (I hope) surprised that his new additional responsibility will be to manage our Facebook and Twitter accounts, along with our email of course. Who know, maybe he'll even want to start a Pinterest account.
As Kristy said, "If a story goes up on a website and nobody sees it, does it exist?"
That being said, does anyone want to follow us? @WMCPaw

Agreed. Wasn't she fabulous!?! Roschke totally motivated me by making all of the online technology seem simple and accessible, and by talking like a real person who has experience with the issues we deal with in class every day. I loved her ideas for organizing your staff and her philosophy that whatever you can do is better than what you weren't doing before.
ReplyDeleteAmelia, I, too, was excited after the presentation. Judging from the conversations at lunch today, I believe most of us learned a lot today. I've already started brainstorming how I'll handle the assignments for our online edition. I emailed our school's bookkeeper and found out that we have $1200 in our account; that's about $1175 more than we had when I got the paper two years ago. That gives me some flexibility. I know I'll have resistance from some students who think going online is a bad idea, but if we tenaciously post, I think the audience will pick up. Lots of ideas swirling around in my head!
