Does it make the front page?

We've gone through a lot this past week, so I wonder what will make your front page?  Is it Ken Paulson from last week, Dylan Smith's "print is dead!," or Ken LoMonte's reno and meth comment?  Or how about Alan singing karaoke?

I have three experiences that will make my front page.

First, going online.  I came here to learn primarily how to bring my students and the newspaper into the 21st century. I had no idea what to do about it and I was head-butting administration before I left. I needed answers as to who to use to host the site, how the host would work in regards to cost, privacy, copyright, et., how easy/difficult it would be, and how to convince my administration to go along with this.  Answers came!  Now, I cross my fingers and hope my admin agrees.

Second, writing as a journalist. It was great to have a professional tell me how to write an article.Working with Steve, my mentor and each other has taught me what I am doing wrong as well as confirmed what I am doing right when it comes to teaching my students how to write stories. I feared Steve's red pen but I welcomed it. I went through a variety of emotions when it came to my stories: anxiety, stress, love, hate, resignation, acceptance, frustration, etc.. Reflecting on it now, I feel like I can relate to my students better after going through the process.

Third, and this has nothing to do with the institute's actual program, but I truly enjoyed my fellow fellows, the city of Phoenix, the Cronkite building and the chance for me to catch up with my relatives.  There were some emotional moments for me these past ten days when thoughts of home came tumbling forward in my head.  The faces I saw every day might not have been the faces I preferred to see, but the support I received from them was welcome, and as Bridget says, I made some pretty great "two week friends." The city is beautiful, although I wish there were some more shops closer to the hotel, the campus of ASU makes me wish I was a college kid again studying at a fabulous building like Cronkite, and the hotel was comfy for my twelve day stay. Seeing my beloved relatives was bittersweet as well.

So,that is what would make my front page. I could lay out the entire paper, though, with what  I took from this experience.

  1. It has been an awesome experience hasn't it? My front page would also contain going online. My number two and three items would be learning more about the first amendment/media law, and videography.

  2. Bridget says... I love your organization in this post.
    My three Front Pages:
"Print is Dead!" I don't believe it, but I liked the conviction and I get Dylan Smith's point. The future really is online.

"I'm the senior editor of mobile, search and social," said Chad Graham. Seriously - he tweets and facebooks for a living! Kids will love this and I loved understanding the new role of social media in journalism.

"The story is what really matters," said every presenter we've heard from. Good point! Their focus has helped me focus on some essentials to being back with me.
