What is that thing?
Anybody figure out what this thing is? It was in the lobby of the Arizona Republic. Is it a venus flytrap? Is it supposed to be a cactus? Are those stink lines coming off it? Why does it have rocks in it? I am completely stumped.
Anyway, the tour of the newsroom today was interesting, but I don't know if it was really eye-opening. Look at the resources this (these?) news organization(s) has (have). You know the equipment alone was worth millions of dollars. I'm lucky to get $500 per year after paying for printing and that money is used up quickly in maintaining equipment and ordering supplies. Imagine what we could do with such resources.
The furnishings in the conference room probably cost more money than a school newspaper gets in 10 years! Just look at it!
We do an awfully good job with the resources we have. We produce newspapers and websites that mean something to a lot of people and are very important to a few people. We do it with notebook paper, 8-year-old computers, a printer, a few high school students, and good old know-how. Sometimes we do it with the administrators hating us and trying to stop us. What professional journalist has to deal with their publisher trying to shut down their paper? We deal with that more often than we should. I think we deserve a pat on the back.
I'm more excited than ever about teaching journalism and I have so much to do when I get home to get ready for the school year. I hope I live up to the trust the Reynolds Foundation has put in me by inviting me down here.

In answer to the question about the statue.... it looks like a combination of the venus fly trap and those weird things from the Matrix movies. Problem solved! haha. I'm curious to see other ideas though!
