After hearing what Robin J. Phillips had to say and share, I'm totally convinced of the necessity of embracing social media.
I'm thinking now, that I might just become the Twitter ambassador at my school. The possibilities for its usage are incredible in my eyes. It could be a great tool for my entire district (as small as it is) and my newspaper.
My main focus and hope with it of course would be to gather followers and use it as a PR tool of sorts to encourage people to read our paper when (I'm really hoping this is a when type of statement and not an IF statement) we get it online.
Taking a step back from my lofty ideas, though, I realize the implications of all of the suggestions. I'd have to lead my frighteningly small staff to take our paper online (and still do print???), and then train them in Twitter etiquette and strategies. When I think of that I'm pitifully overwhelmed.
So I come to my fellow advisers, experienced and new Social media gurus alike. Could it be possible to do some sort of Twitter anything without an online paper? Might we dare just start with a Facebook page and work our way to an online paper later? Or should we just go for an online paper and then USE Facebook and Twitter to help drive traffic to that?? Facebook is definitely something that my school's student body uses hourly if they can.
