Teaching design basics...

The sad, abandoned print newspaper.
How far do I go with teaching fundamentals of layout design in my classroom when I don't plan on using In Design because I'll be totally online? I plan to teach the basics; I know that it's important for them to understand, but do I need to spend more than a period on it?
I wish that our first publication for the year could be in print so they could have one opportunity to put the knowledge to use.
I wonder if my school is missing out on wonderful tradition because we won't have a printed paper. Do you think print is important, or is online enough?

  1. Janice, I wouldn't worry about it. If there isn't an already established tradition, you're not squashing it by not having a print paper.

  2. You said you know "it's important for them to understand?" If you're only going to be online, the only design they'll need to know will be related to design choices they get to make (if any) on the website you decide to use. If you teach a skill they won't be able to use right away, will they retain it?
