Regurgitating a rainbow

To have readers engage with publications, the publication has to look good.  But there is a full buffet of mistakes that designers can make.

My experience comes with use of color.

We call it a "rainbow puking on the page".  I didn't make up that concept, I am clever at times, but visualizing a puking rainbow is genious.

I heard about rainbow puke years ago when I took over the yearbook, and decided to go full-color.  My students pigged out at the "all-you-can-eat color buffet."  Even after constant hand-slapping, they still wanted to puke color all over a page.  I think it is a generational thing.  KIDS LOVE COLORS, AND WANT TO USE ALL OF THEM.

Giving students a visual of how ridiculous their use of color is, I show them these photos.  Then they get it.
