Where the Magic Happens

Today's work in video and Final Cut Pro exemplified how important it is for educators and students to work outside their comfort zones.  Our goal as teachers is to inspire students to achieve more than they ever thought possible.  Unfortunately, teachers themselves can often get in a rut and do the same lessons and activities year after year.  Today's lessons on how to shoot video, the story assignment and then the hands-on experiences with Final Cut Pro were all new to me.  The news web site at my school has been lacking video for the last two years and I was just waiting for our broadcast program to get around to it.  What was I thinking?  We could do it ourselves!  Duh!
When naming my staff for next year I took the bold step of naming editors for our print and online editions so that my kids could do more work for the web.  I would highly recommend that.  Many of us agonize over which great kid to select for "the" leadership role when we should, perhaps, utilize the talent we have by making more opportunities.  Neither my kids nor I are experts in writing or posting online news but that doesn't mean we aren't capable or ready.  I will work with my editors to determine assignments and work flow for our print edition and our web site.  My recommendation will be that the students write their traditional once a month print stories, weekly web stories and once a month collaborative video pieces (like the ones we made today).  If we all get out of our comfort zone we can surely make some magic!
