Dean Callahan helped me summarize the role of social media in journalism. His inflections and gestures led me to create this:
How journalists can use social media:
1. Pull – in: To inform the reporting
· What’s trending, what’s the buzz?
· Should we/Do we have something to say about it?
2. Push – out: To promote reporting
· Inform our public of recent articles
· late breaking news
3. Hold – em: create a dialogue with the audience
· Provide an outlet for feedback
· Create conversation between newsmakers and reporters
This is ripe for a physical/kinesthetic series of gestures or something to help kids retain and apply, but I’m still stuck here. I’m not keen on props, but not totally opposed either. Piece of string? Pieces of string? Kids would remember tying a bow around their peers for the ‘hold-em’ part.
I’d love your thoughts,

Look at you, Bridget! I love a good lesson where I can have fun with kids. Isn't that why we all started doing this in the first place? Thanks. Debbie
ReplyDeleteThis is great- got me thinking about all the ways I can use this concept in my classroom. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOn the topic of getting our students to use social media, I was thinking of having weekly drawings for small, silly things I pick up here and there. Every time they tweet to report or promote, or when they create a dialogue with readers through social media, their names go in the hat for the drawing. My students love weekly conests like that.
