Photojournalism 101

I've spent more than 25 years teaching kids how to read, write and analyze data.  I've spent only two years trying to get them to take good pictures.  When I inherited my program I was lucky enough to have a self proclaimed "Photography Diva."  Unfortunately, like all great kids, she graduated.  (I hate it when they do that!)  I was left with some pretty enthusiastic kids that wanted to take good pictures yet none had developed the appropriate skill set to be a "diva."  To be a photographer on either our yearbook or newspaper students are required to have taken Journalism or Photo 1.  If the students have only had journalism they may not be familiar with the cameras we use for publications (I have them use point and shoot camera in J1).  If they've had the photography class they still may have the camera issue but also may not know what we're looking for in a publication photo. With so many great fall activities it was important that we were able to take great pictures right away.  I asked for help.
I explained my dilemma to Eric Thomas (a wonderful journalism teacher at St. Theresa's High School in Kansas City, MO) who had a great reputation for having terrific photos in his yearbook.  He sent me some wonderful resources.  One good deed deserves another so I'm "paying it forward" by sharing parts of this power point.  Currently this Power Point is located on our share drive in its entirety if folks are interested and Steve has added a link to a Google Doc so that everyone can use it as they'd like.  When I show it to my kids I add slides with our publication photos so they can see what we're doing right (and wrong).  Here is a Google Doc with the slides (File>Download as>PowerPoint to get a copy).

  4. I hope I will be able to show this to my students. Our school blocks all social media. Since I have never used Blogger, I'm not sure whether I can get it. I may have to put on a flash drive and try it that way. Since my photo skills are next to nothing (my last camera was an Argus C3) and I brought a Canon Rebel with me hoping that someone would show me how to use the thing, this power point will be very helpful to me and my students. Thank you, Marla. Larry Wayman

  5. Debbie, Thank you for this powerpoint. It will be SO helpful to my students and me. My most recent experience with a camera is my Argus C3. I brought one of my class' Canon Rebels with me hoping that someone would give me a fast and dirty course on its use. Larry

  6. Friends...I'm going to take most of the pictures off of here because of the vast amount of real estate they take up on the blog. Steve is going to put them onto a Flikr account and then give us a link. That way you guys could use them more easily as well. Hope your kids enjoy it. Debbie
