Out and About

What a crazy day! I really enjoyed getting back to my broadcast roots today. Its been a long time since I had to go out and report a story with a camera. I had forgotten what it was like to lug around the camera and tripod and still camera in order to get good shots.

Our experience was interesting. We had great interviews that lead to a great story. Our pictures turned out really well. We also wrote the captions...our downfall was that I didn't pay enough attention to the time-stamp on our piece--24 seconds is just a bit too short. However, I feel really good with the first 24 seconds. We have solid interviews and b-roll images, but we forgot about the fact that we needed to take video, which shows people and contains sound. So, many of our interviews have one or more people talking, and some of our shots have group members in them. In essence, we were unable to use everything.

Tomorrow, the plan is to do some more shooting...we're going to talk with health professionals about the proper food to eat in the heat and then interview someone eating about if they know which food would serve them better in hot weather. (Sorry---too many rhymes)

I am extremely happy with what we have so far. It's clear and has good flow. Another 36 seconds shouldn't be a problem...we hope. I look forward to what our final product looks like, as well as see what other people have done.

So far, this unit has been my favorite--probably because I feel the most comfortable with a camera and Final Cut. I also enjoyed the shooting tips and Final Cut tutorial. I can't believe how much the program and process has changed in less than 10 years! It makes me feel a little old.
