Local Resource Excitement!

Something that we keep hearing throughout this experience is keep it local. I was incredibly blown away when we took the field trip to the Media Mecca on Friday. I had no idea that this was even occurring downtown, just seven blocks or so from my husband's workplace and something I drive by often on my way to the science museum.

Part of my job as a teacher is to build background and use resources that my students can relate to. I need to make sure that I bring in fabulous resources like what we saw into my classroom and showcase that it is so close to home so that students can see that it relates to them. My class has a subscription to The Arizona Republic in print and USA Today online that we use frequently. I don't think I have ever discussed with my students where those papers come from. I need to give more information like that to my students so that they have a buy in to the process.

I think I also need to start playing more clips of the news in the classroom too, perhaps as teasers to concepts we are discussing. I think this would be great for the morning news anchors to see and encourage good habits with. I am so excited to know about this and share it with my students now. Thanks for this fabulous field trip Reynolds!

  1. All good comments, Heather. Now that you have toured the ArizonaRepublic building, I would recommend contacting them to see if they would let your journalism students come tour as well. We toured the Houston Chronicle last summer, and it really made an impression on the students. They toured several different departments, and got to talk to reporters that they have read and that we had discussed in the classroom. It was a great experience!

  2. I tried several times last year for a field trip with Anita for my students but without fail our funding would get cut over and over again for buses. I hope I can take one this year-perhaps with the grant from Paulson?

  3. Heather,
Our trip to the Arizona Republic has also inspired me to see more of what's going on with my local newspaper. Unlike the AZ Republic though, I don't think it's so interconnected with a tv station and such a good online site like azcentral.com. I'm hoping to tour more than just our major newspaper company then, but get them interested in some of the other local news sources. Several people have told me about the Great Plains Examiner - a smaller weekly (or monthly... I'm not even sure) print source. Are there any other small news outlets closer to your school?

  4. Hannah I know that my local town has one that does tons of work within elementary schools in my area and they would probably be a great resource as well, thank you for mentioning that!
