Keeping Cool in Phoenix Heat

It may have been 105 degrees and climbing in Phoenix Thursday, but that didn’t stop people from enjoying themselves at Patriots Park in the heart of downtown.

They came to chat, lounge in the shade, play basketball and dip their feet in the fountains that spurt three-foot jets of water into the air.

A few people gather to play bean bag toss
with the refreshing water close by.
“I just say love life and have fun,” said Latrina Rosemond, a financial analyst for Maricopa County, after landing a shot in the basketball hoop at the concrete-and-grass plaza.

Nearby, as the sun beat down overhead, a group of four men played bean bag toss, and two-year-old Olivia Pacheco, wearing a floppy flowered hat, toddled over to the fountains, gingerly dipping her toe in the water while clutching her mother’s hand.

Natalie and her daughter Olivia play in the water
to beat the Phoenix heat.
Michael Corroo of the Downtown Phoenix Ambassadors answered tourists’ questions and dispensed free chilled water bottles from an ice chest, along with his advice for beating the heat:

“Stay hydrated,” he said.

Indeed, “stay hydrated” could have been the mantra
for many of the visitors to the plaza, who strolled the square with water bottles in hand.

Certainly, Rosemond said, she had seen worse, recalling one Phoenix summer day when the mercury hit 120 degrees.

“Oh my God, we were miserable,” she said.

Indeed, Thursday’s high of 109 degrees fell more than 10 degrees short of Phoenix’s highest recorded temperature in June – 122 degrees in 1990.

Like many of the visitors to the plaza, Corroo took a philosophical stance on the weather:

“It is what it is."

  3. Your group captured some interesting camera angles during your B-roll taping. I enjoyed the view of the little girl's feet at the edge of the fountain. Great work!
