He has a very cool job.

Chad Graham's business card says, "Senior Editor, Mobile/Search/Social." His responsibilities are all about social media and new technologies for the Arizona Republic and azcentral.com.

He readily admits it: "I have a very cool job."

His very cool job leads us to what should be a very cool job on a high school newspaper staff. One of Graham's responsibilities is supervising two "engagement producers" who are responsible for finding ways to use social media to build "better, deeper, richer conversations" with consumers.

As I gather information for a story on how web-based high school newspapers can drive traffic to their sites, I keep running into ideas for using Twitter and Facebook to get the job done, but I haven't yet seen any mention of who would be responsible for doing it. If the job is done well, it would be time-consuming -- too much for an editor to do along with his/her other responsibilities. Beyond keeping up with the Twitter feed and the Facebook page, an engagement producer would be responsible for coming up with content that would bring visitors to the site, and that would mean keeping up a conversation with the target audience to get their content ideas.

Engagement producer. Who wouldn't want that job?

  1. Honestly I can not wait to tell my kids about this position because they will all want it! I think it is amazing that the paper/broadcast news is thinking about this and staying with the times and putting this out there. I wonder if all major publications have this position.

I would like to see their training that he mentioned too!
