Diversity

Retha Hill discusses the importance of diversity in the high school newsroom.

I felt a little on the spot when Retha asked me about numbers of minorities in my staff. So, I'll break it down here. Of a staff of 16:
2 Indian
1 African-American
1 Latino
3 Asian
1 Pacific Islander
1 Middle Eastern
7 Caucasian

I didn't realize we were that diverse. But looking back at it, I am pretty proud of this. I feel that at my school I am lucky that these kids want to sign up for this class.

After the talk today, a few students sprang to mind that I wish I had spoken to about joining the class next year.  I took a look at my initial roster and it looks like the class will be broken up pretty similarly nest year, assuming nothing changes.  But this talk definitely gave me something to look at when elective sign-ups take place.
