When reporting a complex breaking news story, it's as important to share what you don't know as it is to share what you do know. That's one of the lessons I hope participants took away from today's reporting simulation (along with some hearty laughter at Alan Weintraut's Oscar-worthy performance).
When I came up with The Associated Press, we prided ourselves as having "a deadline every minute," meaning that unlike most other news organizations AP reported news in real time. The Web changed that in a big way. Now every news organization – and every person with an audience – is in the real-time news business.
The simulation is a good way to introduce your students to the considerations that go into reporting breaking news responsibly. I hope you make use of it in your classes.
